Approaches and Applications of Mentha Species in Sustainable Agriculture

The potential applications of the genus Mentha as natural pesticides and environmentally friendly postharvest treatments for agricultural products in sustainable agriculture are reviewed here. non-commercialized species Greece rest world presented, possibility their exploitation is discussed. Recent developments successive methods application—i.e., formulation extracts/oils eco-friendly pesticides, fumigation, assessment performance field trials—are also reported. Several studies have shown that various forms (e.g., essential oil (EO), aqueous extract, fresh or dried plant material, compost, etc.), different cropping systems crop rotation, intercropping system/cover crop, cultivation incorporation green manure) offer to be used agriculture, with goal managing pathogens (bacteria fungi), animal pests (insects, acarines, nematodes), weeds, improvement soil quality productivity well. Finally, several presented concerning enhancement EOs effectiveness overcome limitations nature (being unstable when exposed light oxygen), by using a combination EOs, developing novel formulations (microencapsulation). Taking into consideration all abovementioned findings, it evident could integrated pest management. This can achieved utilizing them either directly manure, indirectly based on extracts. Nonetheless, further experiments must conducted, confirm efficacy formulas under conditions.
